Course Description:

Electronic music opens up an infinite world of sound. You can record anything—an instrument, a car horn, a herd of elephant calls—and turn it into something entirely new. You can stretch time, multiply textures, or simply capture a moment in time.

In this class, students will learn the basics of recording, working inside a DAW (digital audio workstation), using digital instruments, and manipulating sound through effects and processing. Alongside technical skills, the class places equal emphasis on composition—how to develop material, organize sound, and present ideas with clarity and conviction. The skills introduced in this course are designed to be taken beyond the classroom, giving students tools they can continue exploring independently through their own projects and self-study.

A key part of the class is working in a group setting. Students will be developing individual projects, with dedicated time during class to create a supportive, engaged environment for sharing works-in-progress and exchanging ideas. Composition can often be isolating, and being part of a group offers the opportunity to see the many different ways people approach similar creative problems. Because there are countless ways to work with sound, this exchange can be an important part of strengthening one’s own creative practice.

No prior experience with music theory, notation, or electronic music production is required. Students will have access to LAM’s computers, DAWs, and microphones outside of class, and those with their own computers or equipment are encouraged to bring them.

The course will culminate in a public performance at LAM, where each student will present their finished electronic composition in a concert setting. By the end of the class, every student will walk away with a complete piece and the experience of sharing their work with an audience.
